Playbook › Leave space

Editor's example
A close friend has been quiet since their breakup. Over coffee you gently ask how they're doing, and this is their answer.
I don't really want to talk about it.

Tone: Polite · Serious advice

That's totally okay. I'm here whenever you want to talk. No pressure.
Why it works: Respecting the 'no' right away tells them they're safe with you, which is often what makes people open up later.
Got it. Want to just hang out and talk about something dumb instead?
Why it works: Offering an easy change of subject, as a question, lets them choose how the time goes without feeling like a problem to be fixed.
Fair enough. Breakups are a lot. We don't have to get into it.
Why it works: A short line that acknowledges how hard this kind of thing is, without guessing at their feelings or asking for details, shows you get it without pushing.

× Replies to avoid

You'll feel better if you talk about it.
It overrides what they just told you, so they have to defend their boundary instead of resting in it.
Honestly, they weren't good for you anyway.
Judging the ex invites them to defend someone they may still care about, and the conversation turns into an argument.
